Lunch Bunch Today!

Today was the first day of Lunch Bunch for this year. I started off the day by talking to each 5th grade class. I showed them a powerpoint that explained the rules and the reasons for Lunch Bunch. This program is the perfect component to go along with meeting the goals in AR. Studies show that children will grow significantly if they read for at least 20 minutes each day at a level that is comfortable for them, but slightly challenging at the same time. That is the purpose of the STAR Reading level that students use. With this time to read each day at Lunch Bunch, students can increase their reading skills and become sharper students! We had 69 students today during 5th grade lunch...wow! I was pleased when one student said, "Mrs. Baker, I got all the way to page 14 today!" as they were lining up. :) I hope this motivation continues!

Pictured above: Each class has their own box of lunch bunch cards to bring when they come to the media center. For any violation of the Lunch Bunch rules, one hole punch is given on the student's card. Three hole punches results in losing the lunchtime privilege.

September is National Library Card Sign-Up Month

Along with a new cozy fall season comes National Library Card Sign-Up Month! And how timely at the Baker house....on a recent visit to my Mom's, she presented me with my library card from way back when. I remember so vividly her taking my sister and me to the library. The children's section felt huge with the tall ceilings and high shelves. I loved it there. I remember the wooden card catalog and thumbing through it a ton of times to find neat chapter books. Even when I was in high school, I remember moving over to the "adult section" and researching and looking at magazines. I could go on and on....there are happy memories there with my Mom. :)

So anyway....to celebrate National Library Card Sign-Up Month, I am showing you my library card from childhood, and my library card now! I love carrying on the tradition by taking Juliana to our public library. I hope she can feel warm and fuzzy about our trips just like I do about mine. And if you don't have a library card, GO! There is so much waiting for you there....free of charge! :)

We had the BEST DAY today! Mrs. Smalls and I ordered "Reading Rocks" rhinestoned t-shirts and we decided to turn them into a cool theme! We hung a disco ball and some fiery "Guitar Hero" style banners, and even cranked up instrumental rock music to set the mood. Oooooh yeah! Then I printed up some red coupons and gave enough each student to the teachers. A little rock music on the morning announcements, a challenge to make 80% or better in AR today, and some "Reading Rocks" tattoos and lollipops...and then we were ready to go! We had "biker chick" rockin' hats, and kids started pouring in. When they made 80% or better on an AR quiz, they brought their coupon initialed by their teacher and exchanged it for a Rockin' tattoo or a lollipop. Positive Promotions had everything we needed with a "Reading Rocks" theme. We checked out over 300 books today, and 228 kids received a prize. I am so proud of our students AND our teachers for making this first-time effort so awesome!

First Grader Helps Motivate Others to Read

We were so excited when BGE parapro Mrs. Smith brought A'milion in from the bus ramp recently! No, she wasn't here for a regular visit....A'milion came to school with lots of self-made bookmarks to pass out to students here at BGE! Some of them were decorated...wow! Mrs. Smalls and I even got our very own "autographed" one from this generous student. :) Thanks, A'milion, for helping keep BGE students excited about reading. What a fantastic thing to do!

"P" is for pretzels....and purple....and popcorn!!

Today in the media center, we explored the letter "P !" After reading the Letter P book by Kelly Doudna, we made a web of "P" words together. Then we had some fun gluing pretzels and popcorn to purple paper...in the shape of the letter "P," of course! Students picked pink or purple stickers on their way out as a treat. What a perfectly pleasant day! :)

Beep! Beep! BGE Students love "beeping" in and out!

Beep, Beep! This is the sound you hear when you come through the media center these days. Students love to scan their own passes into the new Library Time Clock software. This program, which is a county-wide effort, is helping media specialists keep track of the number of students served each day in the library. So far we have found Fridays to be our busiest days. Numbers are averaging between 170-200 students each day. Here, Mrs. Smalls helps library regular Katavia Howton from 2nd grade use the scanner for the first time. Katavia was our very first "beeper!"

Kindergarten explores Symbols of the United States!

This week, Kindergarten students are visiting the BGE Media Center to review US symbols. We are having fun as we review the White House, Statue of Liberty, the flag, George Washington, and others....even "Ham Lincoln" as one student shared! :) After our review, they made bald eagle necklaces to wear home so they could tell their parents all about what they learned. What a fun
week for me in the library!
